Banca d'Italia 2025 Data: 88% Contactless POS Payments in Italy
Official Banca d'Italia August 2026 figures detail contactless adoption, mobile share, and cashless volume growth in Italian retail payments.

Banca d'Italia's August 2026 report states that 88% of card payments at POS terminals in 2025 were completed contactlessly, compared with approximately 50% in 2021. Cards accounted for roughly 75% of digital payment operations.
Cash Coexists With Digital Growth
The same data show 24% of in-store transactions completed via mobile devices and more than 16 billion cashless transactions per year, more than double the 2018 total. Cash remained the most-used instrument by transaction count at physical stores.
