HMRC Publishes First Official UK Cryptoasset Capital Gains Statistics 2024-2025
HM Revenue & Customs releases inaugural granular dataset showing 17,600 UK taxpayers reported £1.38 billion in taxable cryptoasset gains for 2024-2025 tax year.

HM Revenue & Customs published its first granular statistics on taxable cryptoasset gains for the 2024-2025 tax year on 27 August 2026.
The dataset covers individuals making Capital Gains Tax-liable cryptoasset disposals through the Self Assessment system.
17,600 individuals reported Capital Gains Tax-liable cryptoasset disposals, generating £1.38 billion in taxable gains from £13.8 billion in disposal proceeds.
The figures are rounded and may not sum, according to HMRC.
A cohort of 240 individuals reporting more than £1 million in gains accounted for £717 million of the total taxable gains.
HMRC reported a demographic split of approximately 87% male and 13% female among those declaring cryptoasset gains.
The statistics follow the introduction of a dedicated cryptoasset capital-gains section in the Self Assessment return.
HMRC estimated £168 million in additional Capital Gains Tax from its compliance and education activity during the period.
The data covers only individuals making CGT-liable disposals and does not represent all cryptoasset holders or transactions.
Provider reporting under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework is scheduled to begin in 2027.
