HMRC Releases First Cryptoasset Capital Gains Statistics for 2024-25 Tax Year
Official UK data shows 240 individuals reported over £1 million each in cryptoasset gains totaling £717 million, with 17,600 taxpayers disclosing £1.38 billion in gains overall.

HM Revenue & Customs has published the first official UK statistics drawn from a dedicated cryptoasset section in the Self Assessment return for the 2024-25 tax year.
The data show that 240 individuals each reported more than £1 million in cryptoasset capital gains, for a combined total of £717 million.
These 240 taxpayers form part of a larger group of 17,600 individuals who made Capital Gains Tax-liable cryptoasset disposals and reported £1.38 billion in total taxable gains.
Total cryptoasset disposal proceeds reached £13.8 billion. HMRC estimates that its crypto compliance activity produced an additional £168 million in Capital Gains Tax during the same period.
Scope of the reported data
The figures cover only taxable disposals reported through Self Assessment. They do not represent total UK crypto holdings, the number of users, or overall trading volume.
Disposal proceeds and taxable gains are separate measures; the £13.8 billion figure reflects the value involved in disposals rather than the profit subject to tax.
