HMRC Releases First Crypto CGT Statistics for 2024-25 Tax Year

HMRC reports £1.38 billion in declared UK crypto gains from 17,600 individuals, with 240 filers accounting for £717 million of the total.

HMRC Publishes First Dedicated Crypto Capital Gains Tax Data

HM Revenue & Customs has released its first set of crypto-specific Capital Gains Tax statistics drawn from a dedicated section added to Self Assessment returns.

For the 2024 to 2025 tax year, 17,600 individuals reported £13.8 billion in cryptoasset disposal proceeds and £1.38 billion in gains.

Of that total, 240 individuals each reporting more than £1 million in gains accounted for £717 million.

HMRC separately stated that its compliance and education work generated an additional £168 million in Capital Gains Tax during the same period.

Reporting framework and scope

The published figures cover only declared CGT-liable disposals and do not include unreported activity or other tax categories such as income from staking or mining.

The UK is implementing the OECD Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, with covered crypto businesses required to begin collecting data in January 2026 and HMRC expecting to receive provider reports starting in 2027.

Existing filing and payment obligations remain unchanged; taxpayers with reportable gains or income for the 2025 to 2026 tax year must still submit Self Assessment returns and pay any tax due by 31 January 2027.
