IMF Confirms El Salvador Bitcoin Buys Funded by Private Donations Since June 2025

The IMF stated on September 3 that El Salvador has not used public resources for Bitcoin purchases after June 27 2025.

Accumulation since that date has come from private donations, with wallet transfers between government entities not counted as new purchases.

El Salvador holds 7,764 BTC with a cost basis of about $388.9 million and a current value of about $628.3 million, for an unrealized gain of roughly $239.4 million.

The IMF approved the next $140 million disbursement under the existing $1.4 billion Extended Fund Facility program.

Remaining unknowns

The Fund said no further public-sector Bitcoin accumulation is expected beyond the documented private donations.

The exact origin and scale of those donations remain undisclosed.

Whether any portion of the new $140 million could indirectly support Bitcoin purchases is unaddressed.
